Description

Phenol (also known as carbolic acid) can cause serious systemic toxicity.


Phenol consists of benzene ring with a single hydroxy group.

 

Systemic exposure can occur from:

(1) ingestion

(2) inhalation

(3) transcutaneous

(4) injection

 

Systemic toxicity may include:

(1) acute renal failure

(2) acute respiratory failure

(3) cardiac arrhythmia

(4) metabolic acidosis

(5) seizures

(6) hypotension

(7) coma

(8) gastrointestinal mucosal burns
