Description

Rice bodies are found in synovial fluid and resemble pieces of polished rice.


 

Rice bodies may be found in:

(1) rheumatoid arthritis

(2) tuberculous arthritis

(3) juvenile rheumatoid arthritis

(4) subacromial bursitis

(5) septic arthritis

(6) other types of inflammatory arthritis

(7) rarely in osteoarthritis

 

Rice bodies contain fragments of bone, cartilage and cartilage embedded in fibrin. They also may contain calcium hydroxyapatite crystals, which stain positive on Alizarin red staining.
