Description

Explosives and blasting agents need to be transported in a safe manner. The transportation must conform with DOT regulations (46 CFR Parts 146-149; 171-179; 195; and 390-397).


Vehicle driver:

(1) licensed

(2) physically fit

(3) familiar with regulations (local, state, federal) regarding the transportation of explosives

(4) trained in the use of the fire extinguisher carried in the vehicle

 

Vehicle:

(1) good mechanical condition

(2) strong enough to carry the load without difficulty

(3) have tight floors

(4) any exposed metal capable of producing a spark is covered by a non-sparking material

(5) have a fire extinguisher in working order, at least 10-ABC rating.

(6) shall be marked or placarded on exposed sides with signs with word Explosive (red letters, 4 inches high, white background). A red flag 18 x 30 inches may be displayed so visible in all directions (white letters, 6 inches high).

(7) If the vehicle has an open bed, then the explosives should be in a Class II magazine or original manufacturer's container securely mounted on the bed.

 

Prohibitions:

(1) Blasting caps and explosives should not be carried in the same vehicle.

(2) The load shall not be left unattended.

(3) The vehicle should not be taken into a garage or shop for servicing while carrying explosives or blasting supplies.

(4) Smoking, matches or any flame-producing device are not permitted on or around the vehicle.

(5) Firearms or loaded cartridges are not permitted on or around the vehicle.

(6) Explosives or blasting agents should not be transported with other cargoes.
