Description

Internal hernias can occur in relation to the urinary bladder.


Contents: usually small bowel

 

Location: supravesical fossa (an area bounded by the left or right medial umbilical ligament, medially by the median umbilical ligament and inferiorly by the peritoneal reflect passing from the anterior abdominal wall to the dome of the urinary bladder)

 

Clinical features:

(1) small bowel obstruction

(2) abdominal or pelvic pain

(3) dysuria with bladder irritation

 

CT findings:

(1) cluster of dilated small bowel loops with a sac-like appearance in the pelvic cavity

(2) the loops pass into the space of Retzius and lay in front of a compressed bladder or to the left or right

(3) mesenteric vessels are crowded and engorged
