Description

A patient with cyanotic congenital heart disease may have limited exercise capacity. Providing supplemental oxygen can improve exercise performance. Aerobic exercise can improve outcomes and can prevent deconditioning.

Patient selection: cyanotic congenital heart disease, in stable condition and should be cleared for exercise

Intervention: supplemental oxygen with FIO2 from 0.4 to 0.5

The patient should be monitored during the exercise (pulse, blood pressure, SpO2, etc) with a clinician present.

Improvements:

(1) maximal work rate

(2) endurance time

(3) SpO2 during exercise

(4) improved ventilatory efficiency for CO2 output
