Lawton et al reported a supplementary grading system to the Spetzler-Martin grading system for patients with a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM).
Parameters:
(1) age in years
(2) bleeding
(3) compactness

total score =
= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 1
• maximum score: 5
• The score is the supplemental grade.
• The supplemental score can be added to the Spetzler-Martin score for a combined grade from 0 to 10. A combined grade <= 6 has an acceptably low surgical risk.
