Description

Traumatic head injury can result in compression of structures in the superior orbital fissure, which connects the orbital apex to the cranial cavity.


 

Clinical findings:

(1) anesthesia along the distribution of the ophthalmic division of CN V (over the upper eyelid and forehead)

(2) ptosis of the upper eyelid

(3) proptosis of the orbit

(4) ophthalmoplegia (involvement of CN III, IV and VI)

(5) paralysis of the pupillary and ciliary muscles, resulting in a fixed and dilated pupil

(6) orbital pain

• I would think compression of the optic nerve could occur.
