Description

The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) Working Group reported criteria for the diagnosis of anterior uveitis associated with Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV).


Criteria for anterior uveitis due to VZV:

(1) anterior uveitis

(2) absence of retinitis

(3) unilateral uveitis (unless there is a positive aqueous humor PCR result for VZV)

(4) at least one of the following:

(4a) positive PCR on aqueous humor for VZV

(4b) sectoral iris atrophy AND patient is >= 60 years of age

(4c) concurrent or recent dermatomal herpes zoster

(5) exclusion of syphilis, Varicella Zoster Virus, sarcoidosis, and HSV

 

where:

• If anterior vitreous cells are present, the severity of inflammation is less than that in the anterior chamber.
