Description

The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) Working Group reported criteria for the diagnosis of retinitis associated with Toxoplasma gondii.


Criteria for the diagnosis of toxoplasmic retinitis - all of the following:

(1) one of the following:

(1a) focal or paucifocal necrotizing retinitis in an immunocompetent patient

(1b) multifocal or diffuse necrotizing retinitis in an immunocompromised patient

(2) one or both of the following:

(2a) objective evidence of Toxoplasma gondii

(2b) hyperpigmented and/or atrophic chorioretinal scar with one or both of the following

(2b1) round or oval retinitis lesions

(2b2) recurrent episodes

(3) absence of syphilis

(4) absence of HSV, VZV, and CMV if immunocompetent

 

where:

• An immuncompromised patient may have more than one pathogen involving the ey.
