Description

The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) Working Group reported criteria for serpiginous choroiditis.


Serpiginous choroiditis is a chronic posterior uveitis with ameboid and serpentine choroidal inflammatory lesions which can lead to chorioretinal damage and atrophy if left untreated.

 

Criteria for serpiginous choroiditis - all of the following:

(1) paucifocal or multifocal choroiditis with an ameboid or serpentine shape

(2) one or both of the following:

(2a) fluorescein angiogram with early diffuse hypofluorescent lesions and late hyperfluorescent lesion borders

(2b) fundus autofluorescence with hypo-autofluorescent lesions with hyper-autofluorescent borders

(3) absent to minimal inflammation of the anterior chamber

(4) absent to minimal vitreous inflammation

(5) absence of syphilis, sarcoidosis, and tuberculosis

 

where:

• Lesions of choroiditis do not need to be contiguous with the optic disc
