Description

The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) Working Group reported criteria for birdshot chorioretinitis.


Birdshot chorioretinitis can be diagnosed if criteria 1 or criteria 2 is positive.

 

Criteria 1 for birdshot chorioretinitis - all of the following:

(1) bilateral multifocal choroiditis on ophthalmoscopy with "birdshot spots" (cream-colored or yellow-orange, round or oval choroidal lesions)

(2) absent to mild anterior chamber inflammation

(3) absent keratic precipitates

(4) absent posterior synechiae

(5) absent to moderate vitritis

(6) absence of syphilis, sarcoidosis and intraocular lymphoma

 

Criteria 2 for birdshot chorioretinitis - all of the following:

(1) multifocal choroiditis

(2) positive for HLA-A29

(3) only one of the following:

(3a) characteristic "birdshot spots"

(3b) characteristic indocyanine green angiogram (multifocal hypofluorescent spots) without "birdshot spots"

(4) absence of syphilis, sarcoidosis and intraocular lymphoma
