Description

The Standardization of Uveitis (SUN) Working Group reported criteria for the diagnosis of acute retinal necrosis (ARN) syndrome.


Criteria for the diagnosis of acute retinal necrosis - all of the following:

(1) necrotizing retinitis involving the peripheral retina

(2) one or both of the following:

(2a) positive PCR for Herpes simplex virus or Varicella Zoster virus

(2b) all of the following:

(2b1) circumferential or confluent retinitis

(2b2) retinal vascular sheathing and/or occlusion

(2b3) more than minimal viritis

(3) exclusion of

(3a) syphilis

(3b) toxoplasmosis

(3c) CMV
