Description

A patient with head and neck cancer is at increased risk for suicide. Head and neck cancer is the 7th most prevalent cancer globally (Anderson et al).


Patient selection: head and neck cancer

 

Risk factors for suicide:

(1) traumatic experiences during management (PTSD)

(2) smoking and alcohol misuse

(3) history of psychiatric disorder

(4) male sex

(5) significant pain

(6) fear of recurrence

 

where:

Some of the risk factors for head and neck cancer are smoking and excessive alcohol use, both of which can be self-medications for stress or depression.

Since the marks of surgery are often visible, stigma may also impact patients.

 

Psychiatric monitoring and management should be part of the treatment plan for a patient with head and neck cancer.
