Description

Self-immolation can be chosen as a means of suicide for a variety of reasons. For some it is an impulsive act.


Risk factors for self-immolation:

(1) certain countries or cultures (like Iran) where self-immolation is more common

(2) female

(3) being the first or last born in a family

(4) young adult

(5) mental disorder, especially major depression or bipolar disorder

(6) unhappy marriage (conflict with spouse or other family members)

(7) feelings of guilt or shame

(8) previous suicide attempt

(9) financial difficulties

(10) breakup of an intimate relationship

 

Factors that may be protective:

(1) having a family with multiple children
