A patient with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is at increased risk for suicide, even years after the event.
Risk factors for suicide in a patient with TBI:
(1) depression
(2) substance abuse
(3) economic difficulties
(4) loss of social support
(5) impulsivity and emotional lability
(6) impaired problem-solving ability
(7) post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
(8) male
(9) greater severity of TBI
