Serrand et al reported the SUDEP-CARE score to predict the risk of sudden death in an adult with drug-resistant focal epilepsy. This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple institutions in France.
Parameters:
(1) frequency of generalized tonic-clonic seizures in the past year
(2) intellectual disability
(3) depressive disorder, current or past
(4) respiratory symptoms during or after seizure
(5) sleep-related or nocturnal seizures
(6) able to alert someone about an oncoming seizure
(7) seizure-related fall

Interpretation:
• minimum score: -1
• maximum score: 8
• The higher the score the greater the risk of sudden death.
• A score >= 3 had a sensitivity of 0.82 and specificity of 0.83.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.85.
