A patient with cryptococcosis may die suddenly and unexpectedly. This can occur even if the patient is immunocompetent.
Patient selection: cryptococcosis, which may be occult
Species: C. neoformans, C. gatti
Risk factors for sudden death:
(1) myocarditis
(2) CNS involvement (meningitis, toruloma causing mass effect, meningoencephalitis)
(3) fulminant systemic infection
(4) fulminant pneumonia
