Description

A patient with coarctation of the aorta may die suddenly and unexpectedly.


Patient selection: aortic coarctation

 

The cause of death is usually associated with hemorrhage.

 

Sources of hemorrhage:

(1) rupture of an aortic aneurysm developing in native wall

(2) rupture of an aortic aneurysm that developed at the site of aortoplasty for coarctation correction

(3) rupture of aneurysm in a cerebral artery

(4) thoracic aorta dissection
