Description

An arteriovenous malformation of the choroid plexus can result in unexplained intraventricular hemorrhage and sudden death.

A choroid plexus vascular (arteriovenous) malformation may be associated with:

(1) severe neurologic signs and symptoms

(2) evidence of intra-ventricular hemorrhage with or without subarachnoid hemorrhage

(3) variable hydrocephalus

(4) occasionally sudden death

The patient may have multiple episodes of intraventricular hemorrhage or the sudden death may be the first clue to the presence of the malformation.

The brain should be examined if there is an unexplained sudden death, especially when there is evidence of intraventricular hemorrhage. The vascular malformation may not be grossly apparent. Often a careful microscopic exam of the choroid plexus is required.
