A patient with a diaphragmatic hernia may die suddenly. Sometimes the presence of the hernia is unsuspected.
The diaphgramatic hernia may be:
(1) a late-presenting congenital diaphragmatic hernia
(2) post-traumatic
(3) other acquired form
The patient may complain of abdominal pain prior to death.
Death is often due to respiratory and/or cardiovascular failure due to sudden herniation of abdominal viscera into the thorax.
