An intracranial tumor (meningioma, glioblastoma) may cause sudden death.
The cause of death may include:
(1) raised intracranial pressure with tonsillar herniation. A cause for raised intracranial pressure is hemorrhage into the tumor, causing a rapid expansion.
(2) compression of a vital autonomic center
(3) intracranial hemorrhage
Presentations may include:
(1) a history of known intracranial tumor
(2) a history of neurofibromatosis
(3) neurologic symptoms (headache, seizures, dysarthria) which may be ascribed to another cause
(4) postoperative or postpartum
