Some patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may develop subglottic stenosis.
Mechanism: recurrent laryngeal inflammation
Patient selection: subglottic stenosis
Clinical features:
(1) signs and symptoms of GERD (may be absent or considered minor)
(2) evidence of acid reflux (esophageal pH probe, etc)
(3) signs and symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux (hoarseness, cough)
(4) evidence of laryngeal inflammation and/or acid by pH probe
(5) clinical improvement with control of reflux disease
(6) exclusion of alternative diagnosis
