Description

Neurognathostomiasis may be associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).

Patient selection: clinical and imaging evidence of subarachnoid hemorrhage

Reasons to consider neurognathostomiasis as the cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH):

(1) nontraumatic SAH in a child

(2) SAH in a person living or traveling to a region endemic for gnathostomiasis (Southeast Asia)

(3) SAH in a patient with a history of gnathostomiasis

(4) normal cerebral angiography

(5) eosinophilia in blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid

(6) an elevated ratio of CSF to plasma glucose

The diagnosis can be made by serologic testing or PCR.
