Description

Wutzler et al evaluated the impact of comorbid conditions on in-hospital mortality for patients with severe trauma. This can help to identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Trauma Registry of the German Society for Trauma Surgery.

An AIS >= 3 defined severe trauma.

The presence of Stage IV peripheral arterial occlusive disease increased mortality following trauma to all body sites with an odds ratio ranging from 3 to 4.

Additional comorbid risk factors:

The odds ratio for each risk factor ranged from 2 to 3. An exception is for the impact of cancer on abdominal trauma, which had an odds ratio of 12.
