Description

Musallam et al used anemia and iron overload to determine the risk of mortality in a patient with non-transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia. This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple institutions in the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.

Patient selection: non-transfusion dependent beta-thalassemia

Median age at last observation: 30.1 years

Parameters:

(1) hemoglobin in g/dL (as measure of anemia)

(2) serum ferritin in ng/mL (as measure of iron overload)
