Description

du Bois et al used the 6-minute walking distance (6MWD) to evaluate patients with interstitial lung disease. Reduction in 6MWD is associated with increased mortality in these patients. The authors are from multiple institutions in Europe and the United States.

Patient selection: interstitial lung disease

Outcome: 1-year mortality

Parameters:

(1) baseline 6-minute walking distance in meters

(2) change in 6MWD over 24 weeks

change in 6MWD =

= (baseline 6MWD) - (current 6MWD)

Predictors for mortality:

(1) baseline 6MWD < 250 meters (odds ratio 2.1)

(2) decline in 6MWD at 24 weeks > 25 meters (odds ratio 2.7-2.9)
