Streptococcal Pharyngitis Associated Myocarditis (SPAM) is a rare complication of Streptococcal pharyngitis.
Clinical features:
(1) current or recent history of Streptococcal pharyngitis
(2) onset of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)
(3) cardiac imaging is compatible with myocarditis
(4) normal coronary angiography
SPAM tends to occur in young, previously healthy patients.
Throat cultures will typically isolate Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A). Other species may be involved.
