A variety of tubes and lines may be used to manage a patient. A patient who becomes entangled in one can be strangled to death.
Patient-related risk factors for strangulation:
(1) Down syndrome or other developmental disorder
(2) dementia
Tube-related risk factor for strangulation:
(1) long and relatively free
(2) located around the head and neck
Situation-related risk factors:
(1) nursing home
(2) home care
Differential diagnosis:
(1) suicide
(2) homicide
