Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate mesylate, Boehringer Ingelheim) is an oral anticoagulant that is subject to hydrolysis over time. A number of steps must be taken to avoid absorption of environmental moisture with deterioration and loss of function.
Pradaxa is distributed in bottles with a desiccant cap or in blister packs.
DO's:
(1) Keep capsules in the original bottle or blister pack.
(2) Close and tighten the cap of the bottle as quickly as possible after removing a capsule.
(3) Mark the expiratory date (60 days after opening) on the bottle.
(4) If more than one bottle has been dispensed, open only one bottle at a time.
(5) Protect the capsules from moisture.
DON’Ts:
(1) Do not store individual capsules in a pill box or organizer.
(2) Do not dispense in any container other than the original bottle or blister pack.
(3) Do not use pills stored in the bottle after 60 days.
