Heaton et al gave a scale for describing stool consistency.
Types of stool consistency:
(1) separate hard lump, nut-like
(2) sausage-shaped and lumpy
(3) sausage-shaped, with cracked surface
(4) sausage-shaped or snaky, smooth and soft
(5) soft blobs but with clearcut edges
(6) fluffy pieces, with ragged edges, "mushy"
(7) watery, with no solids
