Description

Stricture of a stoma is a rare complication that may develop.


A stricture is an abnormal narrowing of the bowel segment at the stoma. A significant stricture can result in stenosis at the stoma with mechanical obstruction.

 

The narrowing may occur in the bowel wall, at the fascia or in the skin.

 

Clinical features:

(1) increased bowel sounds

(2) incomplete drainage of bowel contents

(3) fluctuation in bowel drainage (alternating low and high-volume output)

 

Risk factors:

(1) ischemia

(2) post-operative fibrosis

(3) Crohn's disease

(4) underlying malignancy (rarely)

(5) infection

(6) surgical technique (with overly narrow opening)
