Retraction of the stoma is an infrequent complication after stoma formation.
Retraction may occur:
(1) soon after surgery due to tension on the bowel
(2) some period of time after surgery due to ischemia
Risk factors for stoma retraction:
(1) malnutrition
(2) immunosuppression
(3) obesity
(4) difficult surgery
(5) ileostomy
(6) other causes of poor wound healing
