Description

Stoma prolapse is one complication of a stoma.

Definition: full thickness bowel wall protrudes through the ostomy opening.

This is distinct from parastomal hernia.

Types:

(1) fixed (persistent)

(2) sliding (intermittent)

Risk factors:

(1) lack of bowel fixation (more mobile)

(2) bowel redundancy

(3) older age

(4) patient obesity

(5) bowel obstruction at the time of stoma creation

(6) loop colostomy

(7) failure to limit the size of the stoma fascial opening

(8) raised intra-abdominal pressure

If the mucosa of the prolapsed segment has become edematous, then application of sugar can reduce the fluid accumulation, allowing for temporary reduction of the prolapsed segment.

Complications:

(1) bowel ischemia

(2) obstruction

(3) pain

(4) difficulty with appliance application
