Description

Surreptitious administration of a sedative or other drug may be performed as a prelude to assault or drug-facilitated rape. Certain steps can help minimize the risk of such an event.

Steps to prevent ingestion of a surreptitiously administered agent:

(1) Don't drink a beverage that you have not opened yourself.

(2) Don't share or exchange a drink with anyone else.

(3) Don't drink from a punch bowl.

(4) Don't drink from a container that has been passed to you.

(5) If possible bring your own drinks to a party.

(6) If someone offers you a drink from the bar, accompany that person to the bar to order your drink, watch the drink being poured, and then carry the drink yourself.

(7) Don't drink a drink that has been left unattended.

(8) If you have a question about your drink, immediately discard it.

(9) Don't drink anything that has an unusual taste or appearance.

(10) Attend parties with one or more friends and keep an eye out for each other, preferably with at least one of these staying sober.

(11) If a friend shows evidence of excessive sedation or intoxication, take steps to ensure his or her safety and do not leave them unattended.

(12) Alert friends about clubs or people who have spiked drinks in the past.
