Description

Stauffer described a paraneoplastic syndrome affecting the liver and sometimes the spleen. While initially associated with renal cell carcinoma it has been described with other tumors as well.


 

Findings associated with Stauffer syndrome:

(1) elevation of liver function tests including alkaline phosphatase

(2) cholestasis with or without jaundice

(3) variable hepatomegaly

(4) variable splenomegaly

 

Tumors reported to cause Stauffer syndrome:

(1) renal cell carcinoma

(2) benign renal masses (xanthogranulomatous nephritis, other)

(3) transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder

(4) prostate cancer

(5) leiomyosarcoma

(6) lung carcinoma

 

Features:

(1) onset or worsening of findings associated with implicated neoplasm

(2) correction of findings with successful treatment of the tumor (“reversible hepatic dysfunction”)

(3) exclusion of other causes
