Rossetti et al reported the Status Epilepticus Severity Score (STESS) to evaluate patients with status epilepticus. It can help to distinguish patients with favorable versus unfavorable outcomes. The authors are from Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV), University of Lausanne, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Patient selection: status epilepticus
Outcome: unfavorable if in-hospital death (death at discharge)
Parameters:
(1) consciousness
(2) worst seizure type
(3) age in years
(4) history of previous seizures

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 6
• A score >= 3 indicates an unfavorable outcome.
Performacne:
• The sensitivity was 94% and specificity 60%.
• The negative predictive value was 97% and positive predictive value 39%.
