The Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies has issued standards for developing Clinical Practice Guidelined to ensure that they are trustworthy.
Standards:
(1) establishes transparency
(2) management of conflict of interest (COI)
(3) development group composition (see below)
(4) based on a systematic review of existing evidence
(5) establishes evidence foundations for and rating strength of recommendations
(6) articulation of recommendations
(7) external review
(8) updating with revision as appropriate for new evidence
Development group composition:
(1) multidisciplinary
(2) balanced
(3) represent key affected groups
(4) sensitive to important patient subgroups
