Description

Kaposi's sarcoma is a malignant vascular tumor whose presentation may range from localized violaceous macules involving the skin to a disseminated process involving internal organs. Classic Kaposi's sarcoma refers to involvement in non-AIDS patients. It can be staged based on the clinical findings and lesion distribution. Two staging systems have been proposed.

Staging System of Krigel et al

Clinical Findings

Stage

cutaneous, locally indolent

I

cutaneous, locally aggressive and/or regional lymph node involvement

II

generalized mucocutaneous and/or lymph node involvement

III

visceral involvement

IV

Staging System of Mitsuyasu et al

Clinical Findings

Stage

limited cutaneous (< 10 lesions and only 1 anatomic location involved)

I

disseminated cutaneous involvement (>=10 lesions or more than 1 anatomic location)

II

visceral only (gastrointestinal and/or lymph node involvement)

III

cutaneous and visceral involvement

IV

where:

• The original paper has < 10 and > 10 cutaneous lesions for Stage I and II; 10 is not covered. I've included it with Stage II here and in the implementation.

Subtypes for Both Staging Systems

A: no systemic signs or symptoms

B: systemic signs present

Systemic signs:

(1) 10% weight loss

(2) fever > 100°F (37.8°C) orally, with no identifiable source of infection and lasting > 2 weeks
