Meniere's disease may be staged based on the level of hearing loss. The staging scale was developed by the Committee on Hearing and Equilibrium of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.
Patient selection: definite or certain Meniere's
Patient exclusion: possible or probable Meniere's
Data set selection: worst audiogram during the 6 month interval prior to treatment
The pure tone threshold at each level is measured in decibels (dB).
4 tones tested:
(1) 0.5 kHz
(2) 1.0 kHz
(3) 2.0 kHz
(4) 3.0 kHz
average pure tone threshold for the 4 tones tested =
= SUM(threshold at each tone level) / 4
value used for staging =
= ROUND(average pure tone threshold)
