Furushima et al staged olecranon stress fractures (OSF) in young Japanese baseball players based on changes seen in imaging studies. The authors are from Keiyu Orthopaedic Hospital in Gunma, Japan.
Patient selection: young baseball player (13 to 27 years) with olecranon stress fracture in throwing arm
epiphyseal plate closure delayed in comparison to nonthrowing side
epiphyseal plate closed incompletely
epiphyseal plate not closed (delayed closure)
epiphyseal plate closed completely
epiphyseal plate dehiscence observed on the articular surface
complete dehiscence of epiphyseal plate from the articular surface to the dorsal olecranon
• In stage 4 the opening on the dorsal olecraon may be wider due to secondary traction by the triceps tendon.
