Description

Acute Esophageal Necrosis (AEN) can evolve through a number of stages.

acute necrosis

circumferential, black mucosa with yellowish exudates and increased friability, loss of light reflex, somewhat rigid

healing phase

2

black mucosa with whitish exudates; necrotic debris overlying pinkish mucosa

recovered

3

mucosa normal, may show some granulation tissue

 

A case could be further classified by the presence or absence of complications:

(1) stricture and/or stenosis

(2) perforation with or without mediastinitis

(3) superinfection
