Xu et al reported a score for predicting the readiness of a neurosurgical patient on mechanical ventilation for extubation. The authors are from Capital Medical University and affiliated hospitals in Beijing.
STAGE is an acronym for swallowing, tongue protrusion, airway protection, Glasgow coma scale, and evaluation.
Patient selection: neurosurgical patient on mechanical ventilation
Extubation failure: reintubation within 72 hours of extubation.
Extubation success: anything not failure
Parameters:
(1) swallowing
(2) tongue protrusion
(3) spontaneous cough
(4) suctioning cough
(5) motor response in Glasgow Coma Scale, from 1 to 6
