Description

Burkitt's lymphoma can be clinically staged using a scheme developed by Murphy and Hustu, which was later modified by Magrath et al. This is helpful in determining the optimum therapy for the patient.

single extranodal tumor NOT mediastinum or abdomen

single nodal anatomic area NOT mediastinum or abdomen

single extranodal tumor with regional lymph node involvement

>= 2 nodal areas on same side of diaphragm

2 single extranodal tumors with or without regional lymph node involvement on the same side of the diaphragm

primary GI tumor with or without involvement of associated mesenteric nodes only

completely resected abdominal disease

IIR

2 single extranodal tumors on opposite sides of the diaphragm

III

>= 2 nodal areas above and below the diaphragm

III

all primary intrathoracic tumors (mediastinum, pleural, thymic)

III

all paraspinal or epidural tumors

III

all extensive primary intra-abdominal disease

III

localized but not resectable intra-abdominal disease

IIIA

widespread multiorgan abdominal disease

IIIB

any of the above with CNS and/or bone marrow involvement
