Description

Saposnik et al reported the SPAN-100 to quickly identify a patient who may have a suboptimal response to thrombolytic therapy. The authors are from multiple institutions in Canada and the United States.

Patient selection: acute stroke, being evaluated for intravenous infusion of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA)

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) NIHSS

SPAN-100 =

= (age) + (NIHSS)

If the SPAN-100 is >= 100 then positive, else negative.

Interpretation:

• A patient with a positive SPAN-100 tends to have a greater rate of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) after infusion of tissue plasminogen activator and a less favorable composite outcome at 3 months than patients with a negative SPAN-100.

After tPA
