Primary sources of lactose:

(1) milk and milk products

(2) cheese

(3) ice cream

Lactose from breakdown of glycosides:

(1) peas

(2) lima beans

(3) beets

(4) liver

(5) some grains

Other sources:

(1) medications

(2) some lunch meats

(3) snack bars (that contain dried milk)

A patient with lactose intolerance should read the nutrition labels of prepared foods to identify those that may be a problem.
