Lactose may be ingested in several ways. A person with lactose intolerance will need to identify these sources if symptoms are to be managed.
Primary sources of lactose:
(1) milk and milk products
(2) cheese
(3) ice cream
Lactose from breakdown of glycosides:
(1) peas
(2) lima beans
(3) beets
(4) liver
(5) some grains
Other sources:
(1) medications
(2) some lunch meats
(3) snack bars (that contain dried milk)
A patient with lactose intolerance should read the nutrition labels of prepared foods to identify those that may be a problem.
