Description

Aerosols can be generated many ways in the hospital. These need to be controlled or prevented to reduce spread of infectious agents.


 

Patient or employee:

(1) coughing and/or sneezing

 

Ventilation:

(1) positive pressure ventilation

(2) high-frequency oscillatory ventilation

 

Airway management:

(1) endotracheal intubation

(2) airway suction

(3) tracheostomy

(4) bronchoscopy

 

Other pulmonary procedures:

(1) chest physiotherapy

(2) nebulizer treatment

(3) sputum induction

 

Other sources:

(1) hot water supply or heating water

(2) pouring a large volume body fluids into a toilet

(3) any suction or vacuum use

(4) application of heat or something hot (kitchen, operating room, etc)

(5) water fountain

(6) excessive shaking of any fluid

(7) any cutting tool - saw, drill, homogenizer or blender
