Description

The Sophia Observation withdrawal Symptom (SOS) scale can be used to evaluate a pediatric patient undergoing withdrawal following discontinuation of opioids and/or benzodiazepines in the intensive care unit (ICU). The authors are from Sophia Children's Hospital and Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.


 

Patient selection: pediatric patient following discontinuation of therapy with an opioid analgesic or benzodiazepine

 

Clinical findings associated with opioid and/or benzodiazepine withdrawal:

(1) anxiety

(2) agitation

(3) increased muscle tension

(4) muscle jerking

(5) tremors

(6) inconsolable crying

(7) grimacing

(8) sleep disturbance (less than 1 hour)

(9) hallucinations

(10) vomiting

(11) diarrhea

(12) tachycardia

(13) tachypnea

(14) fever

(15) sweating

Interpretation:

• minimum number of findings present: 0

• maximum number of findings present: 15
