Description

Tailor et al reported a model for predicting the probability that an adnexal mass is an ovarian malignancy. This can help to identify a woman who may benefit from a thorough evaluation of the mass. The authors are from King's College and St. George's Hospital Medical Schools in London.

Patient selection: woman with an adnexal mass

Parameters:

(1) age of the patient in years

(2) time-averaged maximum velocity (TAMXC) on sonography in cm/s

(3) papillary projections

X =

= (0.1273 * (age in years)) + (0.2794 * (TAMXV)) + (4.4136 * (points for papillary projections)) - 14.2046

probability of the adnexal mass being malignant =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X))

Performance:

• The authors reported a sensitivity of 93% and specificity of 90% at a cutoff of 25%.

• According to Aslam et al, the sensitivity was 45% and specificity 93% at a cutoff of 50%.
