Description

Patel et al evaluated sonographic images of ovarian cystic teratomas. The presence of certain findings can positively identify some of these lesions. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale.

Examination: transabdominal or transvaginal sonography of an adnexal mass

Sonographic features:

(1) shadowing echodensity

(2) regionally bright echoes

(3) hyperechoic lines

(4) fluid-fluid level.

These findings are shown in Figures 1-8.

The presence of 2 or more of these features is diagnostic of an ovarian cystic teratoma.

Performance:

• 100% of lesions with 2 or more sonographic features were cystic teratomas.

• Of the 74 cystic teratomas in the study, 19 (26%) did not have 2 or more of the features.

• Other conditions (such as hemorrhage, endometrioma) may show 1 of the sonographic features.
