Description

Schull listed findings of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) in survivors of the atomic blasts at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The author is from the University of Texas in Houston.


Malignant tumors:

(1) significant risk: acute leukemia, breast cancer, colon cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, nonmelanoma skin cancer, gastric cancer, thyroid cancer

(2) possible risk: esophageal cancer, bladder cancer, malignant lymphoma, myeloma, salivary gland tumors

 

Other

(1) lenticular opacities (cataracts)

(2) parathyroid disease

(3) altered immunologic response with somatic mutations in lymphocytes

(4) cardiovascular disease (high dose)

 

After prenatal exposure:

(1) microcephaly

(2) mental retardation or diminished IQ

(3) seizures

(4) retarded growth and development

(5) impaired neuromuscular development

 

After childhood exposure:

(1) retarded growth and development

 

Not found:

(1) increased risk of CLL

(2) increased risk of osteosarcoma

(3) sterility or infertility
